Giulio Ciccone( Trek-Segafredo) was unable to start place 18 of the Giro d’Italia after hurtling on Wednesday.
The two-time Giro stage winner was one of many equestrians caught up in a slam with around 25 km to go on stage 17, the same pile-up that wreak down Remco Evenepoel. Ciccone was able to get back on his bike without much postponement and finished the stage in 28 th, accommodating on to a top 10 arrange on GC.
Along with teammates Amanuel Ghebreigzabhier and Vincenzo Nibali who also hit the deck, Ciccone was assessed by medical staff after the finish and again on the morning of stage 18, the team announcing that he had “suffered a ponderous contusion to the lumbar area of his back and left end “. All three were present at the sign-on in Rovereto, but Trek-Segafredo then made a late decision to withdraw the young Italian.
Unfortunately @giuliocicco1 won’t start theatre 18. The rider had a hard-handed night with a fever.
